Ocean View, NJ

Taking the Garden State Parkway might be the route of choice for most vacationers looking to get to the beaches that New Jersey is known for. But while the Parkway is popular for travel, driving it has some drawbacks. Namely, people taking the Parkway miss out on some of the smaller towns that offer a wealth of treasures, restaurants, and shops that the larger Shore spots can't possibly provide.

One of these tiny towns tucked off of the beaten path is Ocean View in Cape May County. Contrary to its name, Ocean View is not within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, but it's easily found off of Route 55 and the Parkway and is nestled in Dennis Township, not far from Sea Isle City. Ocean View offers something the larger Shore spots don't: it's close to everything, yet far enough way that the traffic and noise from the barrier islands are never an issue.

As part of Dennis Township, Ocean View's students attend the township's public schools. Kindergarteners through second graders are housed at Dennis Township Primary School. Third through fifth grades are educated at Dennis Township Elementary School, and then move on to Dennis Township Middle School for grades six through eight. Upon eighth grade graduation, Ocean View's children attend Middle Township High School in Cape May Court House. Dennis Township is located in the 2nd Congressional District and is part of the 1st state legislative district.

Ocean View is home to several campgrounds and RV facilities for vacationers who prefer a more back-to-nature, rustic getaway with space more ample than a tiny motel room. In addition, Frog Hollow Bakery has been a long-standing tradition for the locals and the tourists passing through town for approximately 40 years. It's easy to miss the tiny green building on the right side of Route 50 and it isn't open every day, even in the summertime. But a stop at the frog-themed bakery won't leave anyone disappointed. The place, which has been owned by the same family since it first opened, is known for its delicious donuts, cheesecakes, and to-die-for sticky buns that make even the most dedicated dieters willing to take on a few extra calories for the amazing joy that Frog Hollow offers.

Ocean View also boasts a brewery, Tuckahoe Brewing Company, for that matter. Located on Stoney Court, the brewery offers eight microbrews including: Dennis Creek Pale Ale, Steelmantown Porter, New Brighton Coffee Stout, and Holly Beach Pumpkin Ale. Tuckahoe Brewing Company is open every Friday evening and Saturday afternoon for tours and growler fills.

Probably the things most notable about Ocean View are that it's close enough to the beaches in Sea Isle and the boardwalks in both Ocean City and Wildwood, yet not jammed so closely near those towns that the noise is unbearable and the bustle of the crowds overwhelming. Life in Ocean View seems to have a more laid back feel. Some residents have lived in the area all their lives. Others discovered the town on a Shore trip and decided this was the place worth living in.
